Student Scholarship and Garden Awards Social
June 21, 2024
On May 1 we hosted a social featuring our student scholarship winners and our Spring Yard Contest winners. The event was held at Things Reimagined at 1434 N. Van Ness, a venue operated by Doug Middleton which features work by special needs adults. It is a wonderful indoor/outdoor place that met all of our needs.
Beginning at 6 everyone was treated to appetizers by Moto Delicatessen. This was a time for scholarship sponsors to meet with student award winners and get a chance to know them. Most of the students also brought family members with them. Each student was awarded a $500 check and a letter of recognition. In addition, Annalisa Perea also presented each of the students with a certificate from the City of Fresno. The scholarship award winners and their sponsors were:
Senior Senator Jiovanni Ordonez and sponsor Jeff Bennett Senior, Senator Sydney Maroot and sponsor Megan Thompson, Senior Senator Alessandra Telles and sponsor Annalisa Perea and Senior Senator Gwen Walker and FHS principal Amy Smith.
- The Linda McAlexander award for Most Improved student was given to Stephanie Mendoza Cabrera sponsored by Andy Levine
- The Tori Long award for Art and Creativity was given to Jasmine Infante by Bebe and Gary Long
- The Carol Mills award for Social Justice was given to Steven Gonzales by Principal Amy Smith
After the student awards, the Spring Yard contest winners were announced. Many of the contestants were present and all but one of the winners was there to accept the winnings. Each contestant received a letter of thanks and a photo of their front yard. The winners of the contest received a gift card from Gazebo Gardens, two tickets to next year’s home tour on December 2 and a letter of thanks with a photo of their front yard. Three of the celebrity judges were present to give the awards: Megan Thompson, Shirley Farris and Mark Standoff. The contest winners were:
Place | Address |
---|---|
1st place: | 308 E. Harvard Ave. |
2nd place: | 402 E. Harvard Ave. |
3rd place: | 204 E. Brown Ave. |
The evening was a wonderful way to honor our students, their scholarship sponsors and our contest winners. We hope to continue this tradition for years to come.
As a wonderful addition, an anonymous donor who was present at the social decided to fund two additional scholarships to be given to Fresno High seniors. The award winner for reading was Elyza Castillo. Elyza fits that description: she reads everything, especially science fiction and fantasy. The other award winner was Adrian Garcia. This award was for a student who is interested in nature, especially botany. Both students received a $500 check.
We are thrilled to be able to award 9 students this year with $500 checks. This is only possible because of the support from those who attend the home tour each year and the wonderful sponsors and donors who make these student scholarships possible. We are so grateful to all of them.
